Coupons are to a frugal shopper like waiting tables is to an up-and-coming actor.
If you want to claim the title of a frugal expert at some point in time you’re going to have to go the coupon route. I use coupons for practically everything and I’m not ashamed to admit it. In fact, a few months ago I became hooked on The Grocery Game, and since then I’ve been living large for less!
The Grocery Game is by far one of the best frugal investments I’ve made. For only $1 to start, you can gain access to Teri Gault’s ingenious coupon clipping game plan. The way the Grocery Game works is that members register to have access to lists of deals that will be hitting grocery stores near you. This particular list points out which items will be on sale, at which grocery store, and even tells you which coupons to “play” in order to walk away with your items for next to nothing.
The first time I played the Grocery Game I went to Ralphs with my list in hand. On it, I circled a few necessities such as Cereal, Tangerines, Rice, Velveeta cheese, snacks for my students, and a few frozen food items such as Garlic Bread and Tortino’s Pizza Rolls (I love those things). Anyways, the day before I had already clipped the accompanying coupons to make sure that I was prepared. One thing I love about Ralphs is their double coupons! My total bill before I handed over the coupons was $49.19 (…yes I kept the receipt of that monumental day). After I handed the cashier my coupons and Ralph’s club card, I walked out there paying a whopping $9.15! I saved over $40 that night, converted a few people over to the Grocery Game after they saw my savings, and became hooked on clipping coupons since then!
The Grocery Game is all about buying in “bulk” or what is known as stock piling. The idea is to stock up on items you use most so that you won’t need to run to the grocery store as often. Also, it’s all about playing the right coupons at the right time. The first time I played the Grocery Game I didn’t venture off of my list. I also clipped several coupons for those items which caused me to get many of them for FREE.
To date I’ve saved over $675 playing the grocery game in a little over 3 months.
Some of my best deals included:
- $2.50 for four (4) boxes of cereal
- Four (4) FREE bags of Quaker’s rice cakes
- $2.00 for four (4) boxes of Ritz Crackers
- FREE Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowls
- Two (2) FREE boxes of Wheat Thins
- $0.25 for three (3) boxes of Crest Toothpaste
- 50% off of all Poultry products (including my beloved party wings)
- $0.75 per carton of Minute Maid Fruit Juice
- $0.30 for (5) bottles of V05 shampoo and conditioner
Since the Grocery Game I have went on to clipping coupons for any and everything I buy. Need a coupon for El Pollo Loco? I’ve got it! What about a coupon for The Olive Garden? I’ve got that too! The point being, I’ve since stopped paying full price for items that I know I can get for much less. The result has been me saving more money that I would had I paid full price.
If you haven’t started clipping coupons, now’s the time to throw pride out the way and start doubling up on the Sunday paper for it’s amazing coupon section! Also, don’t forget to check out The Grocery Game.com. It’s a wonderful resource for those who are looking to save a little extra per month on their food expenses.
